Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah on Sunday wished the people of Afghanistan a happy new year and called for unity and harmony.

Speaking at an event to celebrate Nawroz in Mazar-e-Sharif Abdullah said the Afghan government and the people had faced many challenges through 1394 but numerous achievements had also been made.

He praised the security forces for their sacrifices in defending the country and said they are the country’s heroes – that they are always ready to maintain law-and-order in Afghanistan.

“I want to acknowledge the Afghan security forces. Today you have gathered here to celebrate the Nawroz festival but your sons are in strongholds in different parts of the country to ensure your security and the security of the country,” he said.

Meanwhile, acting Balkh governor Ata Mohammad Noor, who also spoke at the event, said the northern parts of Afghanistan will face a difficult time in the coming year as there are a number of elements trying to destabilize the region.

But he said the security forces have done well to defend the country and that they will continue to do so.
