Death Toll in Hajj Stampede Climbs to 453

Saudi Arabia’s civil defense directorate says the death toll has risen to 453 following a stampede at the annual Hajj pilgrimage.

The directorate says at least 719 other pilgrims were injured in Thursday’s stampede, which took place in Mina, on the outskirts of the holy city of Mecca.

Some two million people are taking part in this year’s hajj pilgrimage, which began Tuesday.

Late Thursday afternoon President Ashraf Ghani’s deputy spokesman Sayed Zafar Hashemi said no reports have yet been received of any Afghans killed or injured in the incident.
