The deputy chief of the Electoral Reform Commission Sediqullah Tawhidi, said on Thursday, in reaction to the IEC deputy chief Abdul Rahman Hotaki’s recent remarks, that the current electoral commission members do not have the authority to set an election date.
Tawhidi said that only new members, still to be appointed, in accordance with the ERC’s recommendations, have the authority to determine the date.
He dismissed Hotaki’s remarks on electoral reforms as irresponsible.
This comes after the IEC warned on Wednesday that any changes to the election law could be detrimental to the people of Afghanistan. Speaking at a press conference in Kabul on Wednesday, Hotaki stated the current leadership of the election commission will continue is work.
Only hours after Hotaki’s remarks, President Ashraf Ghani called on Cabinet to take urgent steps to assist the Electoral Reform Commission’s selection committee to start its work.
At a cabinet meeting on Wednesday afternoon Ghani asked the high court chief justice to introduce its representative and to help the committee get established.
