FARAKHABAR: MPs Split Over Ghani's Decree, Voting Postponed


Afghanistan’s Wolesi Jirga (Lower House of Parliament) on Saturday once again failed to vote on President Ashraf Ghani’s legislative decree on electoral reforms.

This came after some lawmakers continued to oppose the move to approve the decree.

The constant delay, which experts argue has undermined efforts to carry out fundamental reforms in Afghanistan’s election law, has sparked strong criticism among election monitoring groups.

On Saturday, parliament included discussions on the controversial decree on its agenda, however the hoped for breakthrough failed to materialize after some MPs opposed the move.

Ghani’s decree was sent to parliament 50 days ago – during the MPs winter recess.
