Gen. Abdul Rashid Dostum, First Vice President was Tuesday in full military uniform and seen driving in a tank as he joined security forces on patrol in Almar district in northern Faryab as part of his drive to motivate troops.
Gen. Dustum who was accompanied by special commandos and Afghan military air force personnel in Almar has met with locals and called on them to “urge your sons to join the peace process and not the Taliban,” according to officials.
Dostum also visited Mir Sahdi village in Almar in a military tank. He has also visited a number of outposts to support the military forces and told them that “I am with you.”
His visits come as the military forces are preparing for a large-scale military operation in the province to clear insurgents which have destabilized the province in the past few months.
Provincial Police Chief, Subhan Qul has said that so far dozens of insurgents have renounced violence and joined the peace process in the province.
“So far 80 people who fought against the government and renounced violence have joined the peace process,” he said.
Meanwhile, Naqibullah Fayeq, MP from Faryab has also confirmed that so far 140 insurgents have joined the process in the past two days.
A week ago, Gen. Dostum said the Taliban and other insurgent groups have sold out and are puppets to foreigners. He also reiterated his previous statement that if insurgents fight security forces they will be eliminated.
Dostum, who is currently visiting battle-weary Faryab, drove home the fact that unless the Taliban drops their weapons, they will be taken down by the security forces.
“Let me tell you one thing that they [Taliban] cannot confront us,” Dostum said, warning that “if they try to confront us, I will hit them wearing my suite and tie.”
In addition he said anti-government armed oppositions were fleeing Faryab.
Dostum however praised the Afghan special forces in Faryab for their commitment to fighting insurgency in a bid to restore peace.
