Afghanistan’s President Ashraf on Wednesday attended the official Independence Day ceremony at the Ministry of Defense in Kabul where he laid a wreath at the Azadi Memorial minaret.
The ceremony, held to mark 96 years of independence from Britain was attended by Ghani, CEO Abdullah Abdullah, acting defense minister Masoom Stanekzai among other high-ranking dignitaries, non-governmental officials and military officers.
Still recovering from foot surgery in Germany, Ghani’s progress down the red carpet to the minaret was however slow as he walked with the aid of a walker.
Independence celebrations mark the August 19 treaty signed between Afghanistan and Britain in 1919 awarding the Afghans full independence.
Kabul residents were however treated to a delightful fireworks display on the eve of Independence Day. Held at the Wazir Akbar Khan Hill, overlooking Kabul, city inhabitants were treated to the display.
