Govt Set To Announce Election Committee Appointments By Week's End

Following the completion of the interviewing process of candidates for electoral bodies, the Afghan government on Saturday said the final list of selected candidates will be announced by the end of the upcoming week.

However, electoral monitoring bodies said the presence of former election commissioners will discredit the electoral reform process.

“Those who committed fraud in previous elections should be removed from the list and even they should be prosecuted,” said Naeem Azghari, a member of the Free and Fair Election Foundation of Afghanistan (FEFA).

“This is the continuation of the previously failed experience which will not help bring reform and transparency to the upcoming elections,” said Mohammad Alam Ezedyar, member of Meshrano Jirga (Upper House of Parliament).

Meanwhile, the Election Commissions Selection Committee said the candidates were selected based on the election law.

“They [the candidates who have been selected or shortlisted] are accused; they are not guilty. We are not seeing any legal problem in them,” said Yusuf Rasheed, member of the committee.

According to the law, the selection of and rejection of electoral commission candidates is one of the authorities of the president.
