Herat Civil Society Network head Khalil Parsa is in critical condition after unknown gunmen opened fire on him on Saturday evening, officials confirmed.
Parsa was on his way home from work when gunmen, riding a motorcyle, shot him, officials said.
He reportedly sustained five gunshot wounds in the incident – to his shoulder, hand and abdomen.
Herat hospital officials said Parsa’s liver had been damaged in the shooting but that a team of surgeons were treating him.
Herat governor’s spokesman Jilani Farhad said that a team from security institutions has been appointed to investigate the incident.
No group has claimed responsibility for the shooting.
