A woman, who was seven months pregnant, reportedly hanged herself in Khan Aqa area of Pashton Kot district in Faryab province, said local officials Friday.
Pashton Kot district governor confirmed the incident and said the 22-year-old woman hanged herself on Thursday night.
According to the district governor the reason for her suicide is not clear but police have detained her husband for questioning.
Meanwhile Faryab forensic experts confirmed the woman was seven months pregnant.
“When we examined the body she was seven months pregnant and she had been hanged,” said Samir Anayat Faryab a forensic department official.
The victim’s family blame her husband for the incident and said their daughter’s body was found in the room where her husband was sleeping.
“Two years ago she got married and in those two years she was often tortured by her husband and her mother in law. Her in laws would not allow us to visit our daughter and she did not have a phone so we could not contact her,” Sayed Abdullah victim father said.
This incident comes during the 16 Days Of Activism campaign to eliminate violence against women – an issue that has many civil society activists concerned.
“We want to say to the people that violence against women must stop in the country,” a Kabul resident said.
Meanwhile the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women was marked in Kabul on Wednesday where officials expressed their commitment to stamp out the problem in the country.
The event was attended by officials, the first lady Rula Ghani, civil society activists and other concerned parties.
According to officials, violence against women in last six months in the country has increase by thirty-two per cent against the previous six months.
