Local officials in northern Takhar province on Monday confirmed that security forces have regained control of Khwaja Ghar district.
According to officials the district fell early Monday after heavy clashes ensued between the Taliban and security forces.
Early Monday, the Provincial Police Chief Noor Mohammad Hakimi said that clashes were ongoing in the Bazaar of Khwaja Ghar but that neither side had full control of the district.
However, by mid-morning officials confirmed that security forces were now in control but that the military operation was ongoing to clear the area of insurgents.
Naematullah Ahmadi, TOLOnews reporter who is in Khwaja Ghar, said the Taliban torched a number of shops during the attack.
However officials have confirmed that reinforcement troops have arrived from the provincial capital.
Top security officials are also leading the war in Khwaja Ghar, Ahmad said.
Officials confirmed that three security force members have been killed in the battle and a number of them were injured.
The Taliban insurgents have also reportedly suffered heavy casualties but there is no exact information about the number of casualties on their side, according to officials.
This comes close on the heels of the Taliban’s upswing in violence in neighboring Kunduz province in the past week.
