Twin Taliban suicide bombers on Thursday attacked a convoy of Afghan police recruits in capital Kabul, killing at least 30 recruits and wounding more than 50 others.

“At least 30 people were killed and 53 others wounded,” said interior ministry spokesman Sediq Sediqqi.

An independent source has however told TOLOnews that up to 50 were killed and 80 others wounded.

The Taliban have claimed responsibility for the attack.

The incident happened when the police convoy was attacked in two-pronged explosions. An eye witness has told TOLOnews that the explosion occurred inside the police bus.

The convoy was on its way from Wardak province to Kabul on Thursday afternoon when it was hit, officials said.

The attack took place in the Qala-e-Haidar Khan village of the Company area in Kabul city.

“After the two explosions, we transported a wounded police officer to an emergency center,” a resident of Qala Haidar Khan said.

The convoy was transporting newly graduated police officers from Wardak to Kabul when it was struck, security officials said.

They did not provide more details about the incident but said that twin explosions occurred in the area.

“The convoy was on its way from Maidan Wardak academy to Kabul, several killed and wounded,” Kabul police chief Abdul Rahman Rahimi said.

The driver of one of the police busses has said that a magnetic mine was apparently placed inside the bus.

“Two police vehicles exploded, there were mines inside the police vehicles as well,” he said.

The Afghan government has condemned the attack.

“The attack shows that the enemy is not able to fight our security and defense forces on the warfronts, therefore they resort to such attacks,” deputy presidential spokesman Sayed Zafar Hashemi said.
