The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) has confirmed that a female member of its staff was assassinated in the southern city of Kandahar on Monday.
According to UNAMA, the circumstances of the incident are under investigation.
“The mission expresses its sorrow at the loss of a colleague and its first thoughts are with her family,” said UNAMA in a statement.
Local officials confirmed that the woman was an Afghan national who was a medical doctor employed by UNAMA.
Officials said a number of unknown gunmen opened fire on her while she was walking on the street in Shar Bazar area of Kandahar city.
No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.
